Leaked Internal email – Multi Billion Dollar Companies prohibiting travel to China due to Coronavirus

This was an email shared internally within a multi Billion dollar firm earlier this week – Do note that this firm operates in a large number of countries. A truly multi national firm with major presence in China not only from a supply chain perspective, but also from sales, marketing, engineering and development perspective. This is not something unexpected but goes on to show how even though main media keeps re-iterating that Coronavirus (now being called COVID-19) is another flu strain, is much bigger and easily contagious than the credit it is getting.

I am changing the name of this firm to Maple, to avoid any issues for the visitor (who wanted to remain Anonymous) that forward this email.

Hi everyone,

At (Maple), the safety of our people is our top priority. We’re continuing to closely monitor the outbreak of the 2019 coronavirus via daily updates from our partners the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), as well as keeping up to date on the latest information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Australia’s SmartTraveller site, and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. We remain in close contact with our HR leaders in China and are grateful to report that as of today, all Maplites in China are safe.

Based on the continued spread of coronavirus, we have modified our travel advice for employees. At this time, all Maple business-related travel to China, Macau, and Hong Kong is prohibited.  If you believe travel to China, Macau, and/or Hong Kong is absolutely required, please reach out to your manager or HR Business Partner to discuss your specific situation prior to making your travel arrangements.

In addition, the Southeast Asia region is experiencing a high number of coronavirus cases.  Some countries within the region have limited inbound and/or outbound travel, and airlines have greatly cut back on service. Because of this, we are limiting Maple business-related travel throughout the Southeast Asia region to essential travel only. Again, if you believe that travel to the Southeast Asia region is essential, please reach out to your manager or HR Business Partner to discuss your specific situation prior to making arrangements.

Due to the severity of this virus, we understand that you may be concerned about your own health. If you are an office-based Maplite who is experiencing flu-like symptoms, we ask that you please work remotely or take time off until your symptoms subside in order to recover and keep your fellow Maplites safe. Please be sure to keep your manager informed of your work schedule.

If you have recently traveled from China, Macau, or Hong Kong to another Maple office, we ask that you quarantine yourself for a period of 14 days (the period of time that symptoms may appear after exposure, as reported by the CDC).  If you experience flu-like symptoms during this period, you are strongly encouraged to contact your medical provider immediately.

To stay up to date on the 2019 coronavirus, visit the World Health Organization and CDC sites.

Should you have any questions, please contact myself or your HR Business Partner.
